We're missing out big time by not planting these any more.
I'm talking about Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) and Port Jackson Fig (Ficus rubiginosa).
Interestingly, City of Melbourne has started planting them again. We should do the same - in locations where we have the space to let them do this with their roots. The result is quite surreal.
If you haven't done it for a while, go stand under one. Probably the biggest one in Perth is at UWA (just south of Hackett Hall). It is an extraordinary experience to stand under it in silence and ponder how those massive limbs manage to stay attached to the trunk.
Quite humbling actually.
