A lot of these were planted around my area in the 1970's / 80's.
It's the Norfolk Island Hibiscus (Lagunaria patersonia).
Admittedly I did pick the worst one in the street. They can actually get half decent.
But only half :)
OK, my conscience is getting the better of me.
Here's one further down the street (and further from the beach) that probably does qualify as a tree.
But as you can see, it's still nothing to write home about. And this would be thirty years old!
Best avoided I would suggest.
