These brick paved Boston sidewalks looked like the contractor had been on the sauce

It was the tree roots. They were causing quite a lot of surface rippling.

But it does show the advantage of using small unit pavers: the surface  "rolls" rather than "heaves".

It suited the area too - a heritage precinct where the rustic look fitted right in.
