Oh, it's a Flame tree alright...

It's time to stop using these in Perth. It's the Illawarra Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius) and they just don't work.

Yes, I know there's the magnificent one at St Georges College, UWA on Stirling Hwy. Everyone always brings that one up. My response? What else have you got? The fact is, what you see here is the more common experience on the Perth sand plain.

This is one of many in Rokeby Rd, Subiaco and they all look pretty much like this*.

Sorry old son, I think you better pack up and head back to the Illawarra.  We need tough guys out here in the Wild West.

* They're all growing out of pavement - something this species seems particularly ill-suited to. Subi would be better off biting the bullet and pulling them out as they're going nowhere.

  1. they seem to do better in heavier clay soils in Perth - Guildford, Bassendean. So, no, not suitable for most of town. And like any other tree, maybe rubbish stock planted.
