Slowly we're waking up...
Read this article. Or if you can't be bothered, here's the punchline:
"Let us shift the emphasis in urban forestry away from counting sheer numbers of trees planted and towards touting exemplary records of tree survival"
And let's get this thing in perspective. New York did an extensive study of tree mortality in 2006 and was mortified to find it was losing 25% of it's street trees before they got to year ten. Year ten! We lose that percentage EVERY YEAR and don't bat an eyelid!!
Not for much longer though. Once federal funding gets tied to results we'll see people get serious real quick. At Perth Street Tree, we already have*.
