A great day at the Urban Tree Diversity conference here in Melbourne today. Learned a lot, got inspired a lot. Looking forward to Day 2!
There was a low point in the day however. It was when a speaker from the City of Melbourne asked the audience to guess what is now the most common street tree in Melbourne.
There were some (not unreasonable) guesses of Plane, Elm, Eucalyptus, Queensland Box...
No. None of the above.
The most common street tree in metropolitan Melbourne is now:
I'm not kidding. According to the latest survey (they do them every ten years or so), the clear winner is Callistemon viminalis.
Do the survey in another ten years and the answer will probably be "Sphagnum moss" (!)
And here was I was thinking it was just us.
