Conference wash up (5)
I thought Nano Langenheim from Monash University drew the short straw by getting the last slot in a two day conference. But she blew it out of the water with a fantastic presentation on the work she is doing creating a software application that puts 3D virtual trees into 3D cityscapes to see exactly what sort of shade patterns they will produce as they grow. And these are not approximations of trees, they're hyper-realistic - right down to the leaf pattern of the particular species. It's an awesome new tool and marks a new level of sophistication in streetscape planning.
