Why "Best Kept Street" awards aren't a good idea for Perth

Because they feed the Western Australian obsession with neat. And neat means no leaves. And no leaves means no trees.

Here's an idea: create a "Leafy Street" competition instead. Measure it by the percentage of shade over the road reserve at midday in summer. Heavily publicise the winners and create a bit of "street envy". Culture change can be achieved, it just takes a consistent effort over time.

Mr/Ms Parks and Gardens Manager: why not make "leafy" your legacy to the Town / City you serve?

Generations will love you for it.
